Mahua Moitra was born on 12 October 1974 in Labac, Assam, into a Bengali Hindu Brahmin family. Her father’s name is Dwipendra Lal Moitra. She pursued her higher education in the United States and graduated with a degree in Economics and Mathematics from Mount Holyoke College, Massachusetts, in 1998.

Before entering politics, Mahua worked as an investment banker with JPMorgan Chase in New York and London. Her global corporate career laid the foundation for her sharp analytical skills in Indian politics.
